Overwatch League Season 1 Playoffs Philadelphia Fusion vs. Boston Uprising Preview and Predictions
Boston Uprising Overwatch Team Logo Boston Uprising vs. Philadelphia Fusion Philadelphia Fusion Overwatch Team Logo

July 11th will bring the first match of the Overwatch Season 1 playoffs between the Philadelphia Fusion and the Boston Uprising.  This means it's time for some Overwatch League Playoff predictions. Both teams saw a fair amount of success in Season 1 with Philly making it to the Stage 2 finals and Boston landing in the stage 3 finals. Boston's success in stage 3 stemmed from stellar play from Striker their star Tracer player.  With the meta shift in stage 4, Striker was no longer able to hard carry with Tracer and we noticed a dramatic drop off in Boston's dominance. Philly on the other hand has had no problem adjusting to the new meta and only struggled in stage 4 because of a lineup readjustment and Eqo being injured. Throughout stage 4 Hotba and Sado slowly took over the tank roles from Fragi and Poko which increased overall consistency and bolstered Philly's ability to play around Carpe's unique style.

Prediction: This match up is very close but I give an edge to Philly for 3 reasons. 1. Carpe is a more experienced widow than Striker. Striker didn't pick up widow until a couple weeks into stage 4 while Carpe has been showing his prowess on widow for some time now. Look for Carpe to win that match up. 2. Philly has a strong Pharah player while Boston does not. Eqo has proven his worth as Pharah and with the map pool having a few good Pharah maps (Dorada, Ligiang Tower, and Oasis to name some) Philly has a clear advantage here. 3. Philly's aggressive style out matches Boston's slower pace. This aggressive style has giving Boston trouble in the past and Philly has only improved at this style with Hotba and Sado getting more and more experience with the team. While this series should be hotly contested I'm giving an edge to Philly.

Overwatch League Season 1 Playoffs London Spitfire vs. Los Angeles Gladiators Preview and Predictions
Los Angeles Gladiators Overwatch Team Logo Los Angeles Gladiators vs.  London Spitfire London Spitfire Overwatch Team Logo

This match heavily favors LA.  If the Overwatch betting odds are good the Gladiators are an easy pick.  With the introduction of Hanzo 2.0 into the league, LA receives a huge boost to their already dominant team.  Look for more Rein/Zarya combos with Hanzo to follow up.  Fissure and Void of the Gladiators have much more experience on these heroes then London's tanks, Gesture and Fury, who prefer to run dive heroes.  On top of that LA's Hydration is low key a very good Hanzo.  We could see London's dps and players, Profit and Birdring, along with their Zenyatta, Bdosin, step up to make some plays on the big stage but LA will grind them out in the end with better and more consistent team play.

Quarterfinals | Day 2

Overwatch League Season 1 Playoffs Philadelphia Fusion vs. Boston Uprising Preview and Predictions
Boston Uprising Overwatch Team Logo Boston Uprising vs. Philadelphia Fusion Philadelphia Fusion Overwatch Team Logo

After an exciting first day of the Overwatch Season 1 Playoffs we're ready to breakdown Wednesdays matches and make some more predictions.  In the first match between Philly and Boston we saw Philly beat Boston in a pretty dominant fashion. Other than a Boston win on Oasis and a decent dive attack on Eichenwalde that almost won them a map, Boston looked lack luster and was unable to hang with Philly's robust 3 tank or 3 dps lineups.  Whether it was Hotba flexing to Tracer or Boombox playing Roadhog Philly brought new and interesting compositions and Boston couldn't find a way to counter them. Despite Carpe having a mediocre(compared to his standards) match, Philly was still able to dominate. The Fusion are firing on all cylinders right now with Eqo having huge games, Boombox playing well on Zenyatta as well as flexing onto Roadhog, Hotba and Sado coming into their own as a tank duo, and even Poko making it back into the lineup in an impactful way, Philly has hit full stride and don't look to be slowing down.

Prediction: This match could very well end 3-0 in Philly's favor.  With two out the first three maps being payload and hybrid we could see a repeat of Boston struggling to gain momentum on these kinds of maps.  That leaves just the control map and although Boston won the control map of the first series, I see that being an outlier due to Philly's superior Pharah and 3 tank lineups.  Again, Philly takes the edge in this match.

Overwatch League Season 1 Playoffs London Spitfire vs. Los Angeles Gladiators Preview and Predictions
Los Angeles Gladiators Overwatch Team Logo Los Angeles Gladiators vs.  London Spitfire London Spitfire Overwatch Team Logo

Match 1 between LA and London was a blowout.  LA walked through London on Junkertown, struggled a bit on Ligiang, and won in spectacular fashion on Kings Row.  London's attacks on the payload and hybrid maps were somewhat affective but in the end entirely too slow. LA's attacks on the other hand were blisteringly fast and showcased LA's superior teamwork and strategy.  The only map London had success on was Ligiang and that came in the form of a single round win. All in all Match one was an easy 3-0 for LA and I don't see that changing much in our 2nd match.

Prediction: London may be able to take a map or two in this series but LA will more then likely win out in the end. If the spitfire are able to pick up any maps they will be Oasis if they can just plain out frag LA, and Eichenwalde due to it being a dive heavy map favoring London's preferred play style.  Other than that I see LA winning the other more team oriented 3 tank style maps with ease.

Semifinals | Day 1

Overwatch League Season 1 Playoffs London Spitfire vs. Los Angeles Valiant Preview and Predictions
Los Angeles Valiant Overwatch Team Logo Los Angeles Valiant vs. London Spitfire London Spitfire Overwatch Team Logo

Start Time: July 18th, 16:00 PT / 19:00 ET / 01:00 CEST

After reversing sweeping the Gladiators in a pretty spectacular fashion London has all the hype in the world right now.  But, don't forget about the Valiant.  They are the best team in Overwatch right now.  Coming off a stage 4 win, LA's vision as a team is coming into fruition.  Their tank line is very solid.  Fate has been playing so good and Space is always solid.  Soon and Agilities are both top tier dps in their own right and both are very consistent.  Custa, being the most improved Mercy of stage 4, has found his home in the Valiant after being traded from the fuel and it is showing.  Kariv a dps turned support has been playing great on Zen as well as flexing onto Widowmaker.  The Valiant is the best team in Overwatch right now because they have raw talent to go along with a consistent team play style that is going to be hard for any team to beat let alone the Spitfire.

London is coming off a win over a tattered LA Gladiators.  The Gladiators without their star tank Fissure looked very sloppy and even a little tired in their second and third matches vs London.  For some reason Silkthread was playing over Hydration(my only explanation is he had more practice time on Hanzo 2.0 because Hydration was still playing Hanzo 1.0 in stage 4) and on top of that Surefour looked tired and his shots were off.  The Gladiators looked like a whole different team and didn't put up much of a fight.  So while London has a whole lot of hype around them right now, they have yet to really prove themselves vs a good team.  They will have to this week against the LA Valiant.

Prediction: LA will come out on top in this one.  Their consistent team play will trump London's explosive frag dependent play style.

Overwatch League Season 1 Playoffs Philadelphia Fusion vs. New York Excelsior Preview and Predictions
New York Excelsior Overwatch Team Logo New York Excelsior vs. Philadelphia Fusion Philadelphia Fusion Overwatch Team Logo

Start Time: July 18th, 14:00 PT / 17:00 ET / 23:00 CEST

New York had a lackluster end to Season 1 compared to their previous seasons.  They lost their big match ups through out the season most notably against Boston in the last week of the stage.  In the stage 4 playoffs they struggled to even get past Dallas in the semis and then fell to the Valiant 3-1 in the finals.  It is possible New York was sandbagging stage 4 by saving their good strategies for the season playoffs, but nonetheless other teams in the league have leveled the playing field and New York is no longer the power house they were in Season 2 and 3.  Philly is coming off a pretty decisive win vs Boston despite Neptuno not playing for the first part of the second match due to being sick.  If Neptuno had been playing at full strength that series wouldn't have gone to a third match.

Prediction: This is going to be a very close match between 2 similar teams.  The widow duel between Carpe and SBB/Pine will be closely contested but I give a slight edge to New York.  Eqo and Libero will be about even in impact on the projectile dps role.  Tank battle favors Philly with Hotba and Sado overcoming Meko and Janus/Mano.  Supports are New York's strong point Philly with Jjonak being a beast on Zen.  This match will come down to who wins the widow duel and whether or not Philly can pressure Jjonak enough to keep him off their tanks.  I see New York coming out on top in this first match.

Start Time: July 20th, 14:00 PT / 17:00 ET / 23:00 CEST

London continue to surprise. That being said, their win over the Valiant in Match 1 is in part due to the Valiant having first day nerves and being surprised by a couple things London brought out. Soon was almost non existent for most of the match. Although Birdring played well he didn't shutdown Soon. Soon was just simply missing shots. Soon has been in slumps before and pulled out of them. With a day of rest and a team that trusts him I see him pulling out of this one as well. Two major twists in London's game plan that threw off the Valiant were Mccree on Control Center of Ligiang Tower and Ana on second point of Hanamura.  Birdrings Mccree came as a surprise to the Valiant who rolled out with a Pharah. The Mccree pick instantly shutdown Pharah and gave London the crucial first cap of Control Center ultimately winning them the map. Again, in another closely contested map, London threw in a wrinkle on second point of Hanamura by bringing out an Ana. The Valiant were unable to adjust to this resulting in a tie on Hanamura. With a day of analysis the Valiant can correct these issues and come back to win this series.

Prediction: The Valiant are going to grind out London with more consistent team play. If Soon can start to hit just a few more shots, LA should be able to capitalize on London's mistakes and take the series.

Start Time: July 21st, 14:00 PT / 17:00 ET / 23:00 CEST

Philadelphia is playing on another level then other teams right now. They have seemingly mastered this new meta in a very small amount if time and it is showing more and more each week. Eqo is playing absolutely insane and is easily the best non Korean dps if not the best dps in overwatch right now. With the tank trio of Hotba, Sado, and Poko, Philly is very versatile and can run 3 tank comps as well as 3 dps comps at will. On the other hand the Excelsior are struggling to find their place in the new meta. Their strength lies in their three power house dps players and a god like Zen which in this new meta is too much of one thing.  The Excel can't rely on their dps players as much due to three tank comps being as strong as they are, and with single support being in vogue, Jjonaks Zen has less of an impact.

Prediction: Look for Philly to take this second match and move on to the finals.

Philadelphia Fusion Overwatch Team Logo Philadelphia Fusion vs. London Spitfire London Spitfire Overwatch Team Logo

Start Time: July 27th, 17:00 PT / 20:00 ET / 02:00 CEST

Prediction: London have beaten the Valiant and taken the title of best team in overwatch.  That being said Philly is very strong in their own right.  This match up is as close as it gets.  It's hard to give an edge to either team but I think London comes out slightly on top.  London's tank line of Gesture and Fury has been playing so good.  Gesture's Orisa has been solid with some clutch halts.  His Winston has also been great but he also hasn't been challenged by a really good Hanzo player yet.  Look for Eqo to take on that challenge.  Bdosin has had some stand out plays for London as well.  Whether on Zen or flexing onto Roadhog, hes been making big plays.  On the dps side of things, Profit and Birdring are both in good form.  You can see the cool confidence in their mouse movements(especially Profit) and as long as their tanks and supports continue to play good so will they.  Despite the level London is playing at, you can't count out Philly.  If Philly bring their A game they have the ability to blow London over.  Both Eqo and Carpe are so competitive and can have such big impacts when they are playing their best.  This being said, Carpe has been a little underwhelming.  He will need to have some insane moments to help lift his team to a victory.  Philly's unique style and explosive play has the potential to out do London but its going to come down to game day play making for each team.  Through out the playoffs, neither team has been challenged like they will against each other.  This is such a hard match to predict, but despite my heart is going with Philly, my brain is telling me London.  London will take the finals in a hotly contested series.
